Notes
- This list summarises information extracted from two carriage diagram books produced by the NBR, one c. 1908 and the other c. 1921.
- Each diagram has been given a unique reference number and the NBR 1908, NBR 1921 and LNER diagram numbers, if allocated, are quoted.
- The diagrams are sorted by class. A build date is also given, if known.
- The abbreviation ‘NPCS’ means ‘Non-Passenger Carrying Stock’.

(a) These 4 vehicles were built by Holmes for the West Highland Line and were brought into use when the line opened on 7th August 1894. A typical WHR train of the period is believed to have consisted of one first (diagram 5), plus two thirds (diagram 6) and a brake composite (diagram 7). b) Brakes were originally Westinghouse only and it is believed they were altered to dual (W & V) prior to 1912. In common with similar NBR stock, they would probably have been converted to vacuum only by the LNER c1930s c) Last example, 256, withdrawn 4/2/1939 d) GWMS passenger capacity (32) differs from HMRS (30) and AAM (30). 30 assumed correct, as built. |

C0760 | 79 | 76 | 64B | Eight Wheel Bogie First 1907-8 8 Compartment First. a) 54 non-corridor Firsts ordered after meeting on 13/10/1906 as follows: 16 from Metropolitan C&W at £1971 each, running nos 420-435 10 from Hurst Nelson at £1961 15s each, running nos 436-445 8 from Brush Electrical at £1810 each, running nos 446-453 b) Loco & Stores Committee at meeting on 18/5/1911 agreed to convert 10 Firsts into composites, at £215 each, and 6 were chosen from diagram 76 vehicles, as listed. Vehicles re-numbered in Composite series c) On 29/1/1919 two further Firsts were ordered, to charge BIR.121. These took the vacated running nos 448 & 449 and were the only carriges of this type built with steel underframes. They were the last non-corridor Firsts built for the NBR. d) In the original design of diagram 76 vehicles, the compartments were split 4 smokers, 3 non-smokers and 1 smoker, with the smoking designation etched on the fixed lights. This was dispensed with after 11/2/1919. e) In common with many NBR vehicles, roof ventilators were only fitted above the end compartments. f) As originally contructed, only Westinghouse brakes were fitted, but dual systems were fitted from around 1910. LNER gradually replaced dual systems with vacuum only. |
