Carriage diagram list – eight wheel carriages

Notes

  1. This list summarises information extracted from two carriage diagram books produced by the NBR, one c. 1908 and the other c. 1921.
  2. Each diagram has been given a unique reference number and the NBR 1908, NBR 1921 and LNER diagram numbers, if allocated, are quoted.
  3. The diagrams are sorted by class. A build date is also given, if known.
  4. The abbreviation ‘NPCS’ means ‘Non-Passenger Carrying Stock’.

First Class Saloon (WH). (a) These 4 vehicles were built by Holmes for the West Highland Line and were brought into use when the line opened on 7th August 1894. A typical WHR train of the period is believed to have consisted of one first (diagram 5), plus two thirds (diagram 6) and a brake composite (diagram 7). b) Brakes were originally Westinghouse only and it is believed they were altered to dual (W & V) prior to 1912. In common with similar NBR stock, they would probably have been converted to vacuum only by the LNER c1930s c) Last example, 256, withdrawn 4/2/1939 d) GWMS passenger capacity (32) differs from HMRS (30) and AAM (30). 30 assumed correct, as built.

8 Compartment First. a) 54 non-corridor Firsts ordered after meeting on 13/10/1906 as follows: 16 from Metropolitan C&W at £1971 each, running nos 420-435 10 from Hurst Nelson at £1961 15s each, running nos 436-445 8 from Brush Electrical at £1810 each, running nos 446-453 b) Loco & Stores Committee at meeting on 18/5/1911 agreed to convert 10 Firsts into composites, at £215 each, and 6 were chosen from diagram 76 vehicles, as listed. Vehicles re-numbered in Composite series c) On 29/1/1919 two further Firsts were ordered, to charge BIR.121. These took the vacated running nos 448 & 449 and were the only carriges of this type built with steel underframes. They were the last non-corridor Firsts built for the NBR. d) In the original design of diagram 76 vehicles, the compartments were split 4 smokers, 3 non-smokers and 1 smoker, with the smoking designation etched on the fixed lights. This was dispensed with after 11/2/1919. e) In common with many NBR vehicles, roof ventilators were only fitted above the end compartments. f) As originally contructed, only Westinghouse brakes were fitted, but dual systems were fitted from around 1910. LNER gradually replaced dual systems with vacuum only.

8 Compartment Third. a) Construction of 10-12 third class carriages approved at Locomotive & Stores Committee meeting on 15/12/1888. b) Holmes followed his first design for bogie carriages (1885) with this series, consisting of firsts, thirds and brake thirds. c) Brakes were Westinghouse as originally built. Later fitted for vacuum operation. No details on dates of conversion. d) 2 thirds burned at Craigendoran 15/12/1892.

Third Class Saloon (WH). a) These 8 vehicles were built by Holmes, originally for West Highland Line and were brought into use when the line opened on 7th August 1894. A typical WHR train of the period is believed to have consisted of one first (diagram 5), plus two thirds (diagram 6) and a brake composite (diagram 7). b) Brakes were originally Westinghouse only this was altered to dual (W & V) prior to 1912. In common with similar NBR stock, they were converted to vacuum only by the LNER prior to 1930. c) The vehicles would have been displaced from the WHR route around 1913, with the introduction of new bogie stock and re-allocated to secondary routes or cross-country services. In early LNER days, at least one train was noted as working from Duns. Towards the end of their life, some were used on special or excursion services. d) GWMS passenger capacity (50) differs from HMRS (42) and AAM (40) - 40 assumed.

9 Compartment Third. Introduced by Reid in 1909, this type of vehicle became the NBR’s standard non-corridor 3rd, with a total of 115 being built. The wooden bodies were constructed largely of teak, with the outside panels of mahogany. The interior was finished in yellow pine. Seats were woven wire upholstered in french carpet material of NB pattern. The floor of each compartment was covered in brown linoleum. Steam heated. Originally, two compartments at each end of the vehicle were designated for smoking, indicated by blue labels with white letters. In some vehicles, the 4 smoking compartments were located together, 4 compartments from one end and 1 compartment from the other end.

Brake Composite Coupe (WH). a) These 6 vehicles were built by Holmes, originally for West Highland Line. It is assumed the build dates were similar to diagrams 5 & 6 and also assumed these vehicles were built at Cowlairs, likewise. A typical WHR train of the period is believed to have consisted of one first (diagram 5), plus two thirds (diagram 6) and a brake composite (diagram 7). b) There is less detailed information available on these coaches than the others (diagrams 5 & 6). It is reasonable to assume that brake details would have been similar, with Westinghouse originally, giving way to dual (W & V), then vacuum only by the 1930s c) Some details of individual vehicle re-numbering by LNER is known. Nos: 32368-72 have been identified, but uncertain how they match to the NBR nos. d) One vehicle (original number not known), was re-numbered 466, when it was converted to an officer’s saloon in 1918 and became diagram 150, which lasted until 1960 e) All other vehicles were withdrawn by the LNER by 1939.

Luggage Composite. These carriages were a development of an earlier bogie luggage composite introduced by the NBR c1890. They were useful as through carriages, where brake vehicles were not required. The first class accommodation consisted of 2 smokers, 2 non-smokers and 1 smoker and the third class was 2 smoker and 1 non-smoker. First compartments seated 4 per side and thirds 5 per side. Gas was supplied from two cylinders and fed to each lamp through a roof mounted pipe.

They were re-numbered in the composite series as 151-156 and allocated diagram 109. Thes 6 were from an original batch of 8 diagram 76 Firsts built by Brush. SEE DIAGRAM REF:079/076 for details. c) The NBR conversion c1911 did not alter the exterior, other than the painting style. d) As originally contructed, only Westinghouse brakes were fitted, but dual systems were fitted from around 1910. LNER gradually replaced dual systems with vacuum only.

Invalid Saloon. Although ordered in 1915, this vehicle was not built until after the war in 1919. The original layout was first class compartment, toilet, saloon with sofa, table, 6'-6" x 3'-0" bed and three fixed seats, toilet, third class compartment and luggage compartment. The saloon door from the outside was, in fact, two doors, one being standard and the other a smaller door, presumably to facilitate the invalid entry. A standard vestibule connection was provided at each end. The car became E32283 under BR and latterly Sc32283E. On withdrawal, it was selected for use as a District Engineer’s saloon based at Inverness and was renumbered as DE320577. Both ends were altered at this time. This saloon is believed to be the one now preserved by SRPS.
