Four Wheel NPCS c1892-93 Corpse Van. Used for the conveyance of coffins. The large roof doors were hinged and the sides folded down. Two ventilators (a slate in the woodwork) were provided on each end. Coach axleguards were fitted and Mansell wheels. Due to higher costs after First War, use declined and had more or less ceased c1926. Usually marshalled behind the engine of the train carrying the mourners in the early days. In later NBR days, they were attached at the rear of the train. Normally used around the Edinburgh – Glasgow services (one was recorded travelling from Manuel to Glasgow QSt) and when not in use kept in a spur at Waverley. Painted in NBR coach lake with black ironwork and light yellow lettering, shaded to the left and below with vermilion and white. Mansell wheels were brown with black ironwork and white tyres. Height refers to centre of pitched roof. Height at sides was 6ft 3in. |
