Carriage diagram list – four wheel carriages

Notes

  1. This list summarises information extracted from two carriage diagram books produced by the NBR, one c. 1908 and the other c. 1921.
  2. Each diagram has been given a unique reference number and the NBR 1908, NBR 1921 and LNER diagram numbers, if allocated, are quoted.
  3. The diagrams are sorted by class. A build date is also given, if known.
  4. The abbreviation ‘NPCS’ means ‘Non-Passenger Carrying Stock’.

4 Compartment First Class During the period 1882-93, Holmes continued to build similar carriages to those introduced by Drummond 1875-79, When first built by Drummond, the bodies were 7'-6" wide and had 12 spoke wheels replaced by Mansell type around 1880 (in some cases later). They were lit by oil lamps in Drummond#8217;s time. The later Holmes builds were 8ft wide and had Mansell wheels and were gas lit.

4 Compartment First Class. Drummond’s 4 wheel carriage designs appeared from 1875 to 1879. When built, these most likely had Mansell wheels. They were lit by oil lamps in Drummond’s time. Later builds would have been gas lit. These carriages are unusual in that early examples were built with a domed roof instead of usual Drummond roof profile (see diagram ref. C0222) Later examples reverted to the standard flat arched profile.

5 Compartment Third Class. This diagram represents the Holmes version of the NBR 4 wheeler, based on the 1870s Drummond design. Main difference is the body width increased to 8'-0" and use of Mansell wheels. As built, the Holmes carriages would have had Westinghouse brakes and gas lighting.

Later builds would have been gas lit. During the period 1882-93, Holmes continued to build similar carriages. A few were built with a domed roof — see ref. C0242

5 Compartment Third (domed roof). Drummond’s 4 wheel carriage designs appeared from 1875 to 1879, this particular design appearing in 1877. It is unusual in that it has a domed roof. Firsts were also produced with similar roofs at this time. Later designs reverted to the flat/arched segmental profile. (see diagram ref C0241). It is not clear from records which diagram number this coach belonged to — further investigation required. A known example is no. 650 which was destroyed in Tay Bridge disaster. 3 Compartment Third Brake. 9ft wide over look-outs. Built by Drummond 1875-79 when it is thought the wheels were originally 12 spoke — replaced by Mansell type probably around 1880 (in some cases later). Look-out side duckets had convex top. Built by Holmes 1882-93. Look-out side ducket had concave top and smaller window with side lamps mounted on top to allow lamps to be serviced from inside the vehicle No.348 was photographed with spoked wheels in 1894

2 Compartment Third Brake. 9ft wide over look-outs. James Watson lists this diagram as pre-Drummond in his HMRS article. However, pictures of this type of vehicle show a Drummond style roof profile; and so Watson may be in error, perhaps confusing this vehicle with the 1908 diagram 31 earlier version (see diagram ref: B0310).

4 Compartment Third. Originally built by Ashbury to their design, probably as a first/second which was subsequently changed to first/third when second class abolished c1892. (see ref. B1090) Vehicles were converted to all third class by 1921. The original NBR numbers are quoted in vehicle data -it is not known if these were in fact retained on conversion to thirds or new numbers allocated.

Port Carlisle Dandy number 1. It is believed this horse-drawn coach was originally constructed in the early 1850s at St Margaret’s for the Leith branch. In 1856 it was transferred to the North Berwick branch until 1857. It was available for use on the Port Carlisle branch when the NBR took over in 1862. It continued to be used until the line reverted to steam traction around 1914. It is now in the National Railway Museum. Dimensions given are from GWMS book. There are differences in quoted dimensions in NBR Journal and HMRS text.

It proved unsatisfactory in service and was rebuilt in 1912. It continued in service until 1914, when steam traction took over.

Corpse Van. Used for the conveyance of coffins. The large roof doors were hinged and the sides folded down. Two ventilators (a slate in the woodwork) were provided on each end. Coach axleguards were fitted and Mansell wheels. Due to higher costs after First War, use declined and had more or less ceased c1926. Usually marshalled behind the engine of the train carrying the mourners in the early days. In later NBR days, they were attached at the rear of the train. Normally used around the Edinburgh – Glasgow services (one was recorded travelling from Manuel to Glasgow QSt) and when not in use kept in a spur at Waverley. Painted in NBR coach lake with black ironwork and light yellow lettering, shaded to the left and below with vermilion and white. Mansell wheels were brown with black ironwork and white tyres. Height refers to centre of pitched roof. Height at sides was 6ft 3in.
